The extraordinary and beautiful range of colors found in Opal gemstones makes this October birthstone a sought after gem. Often compared to volcanoes, galaxies and fireworks, this special gemstone ignites the imagination with its spectacular play of colors. Historically, Romans thought Opals to be the most precious and powerful of all Gems since it contains the colors of all other gems. The Roman Scholar Pliny commented that Opals “encompassed the red of ruby, the green of emerald, the yellow of topaz, the blue of sapphire, and the purple of amethyst.” Arab Bedouins believed that Opals fell from the sky during thunderstorms and somehow had lightening contained within. Interestingly, Opals actually have water inside them, containing up to 20% water trapped in the silica structure. Opals are produced when seasonal rains drench dry ground in semi-desert regions like the Australian Outback. The water is soaked deep into the rock and then in the dry season the water is evaporated leaving behind silica deposits which form Opal gemtones.
